Netherlands Travelogue: Basil Bags

Netherlands Travelogue: Basil Bags

Posted on 26 February 2008

Editors note: We were the first to import Basil bags, and it's been a thrill to work with Basil in Holland to create bags and patterns that are more pleasing to our customers. We love Basil. Martijn, the owner, is passionate about growing his family business into new and relevant markets, and we have not seen any company capable of competing on quality, style, or price.

- February 2016

We sell fashionable bikes, bikes that people are actually excited about riding, bikes that grab attention and add colour to bike stands all over Toronto (and beyond!). It only seemed logical to sell fashionable bags. The story with bags was not unlike our story with bikes. We've had our eyes on Basil for years, and after begging our suppliers to bring these products in, we gave up and decided to bring them in ourselves. It's another first for our little shop and another first for North America. Basil bags are the most fashionale and well built bag we have ever laid eyes on - the best Holland has to offer. You see, it doesn't look like a bike bag. That's what is good about it. Instead, it looks like a really nice bag that happens to fit perfectly on a bike. The Mirte bag comes in vintage patterns like the beautiful Delft blue edition (above). The Blossom bag comes in a variety of Japanese inspired prints that visually pop off the fabric and are screened multiple times for full effect. We had the chance to visit Basil in the little town of Ulft, near the German border, and the place is impressive. Basil has been around for quite some time and is always pushing the Dutch bicycle industry to be more and more fashion-forward. The plant is a huge array of wicker and waterproof fabrics, new products in stages of design and a busy staff who still had time to make us multiple cups of coffee. Marthijn, the owner, is the kind of man we love. Despite being in a country that has beautiful bikes and cycling products, he is always pushing his products ahead - either inventing brand new clever designs (like the full raincover for child seats) or playing with new colour palettes or consulting the fashion industry for latest trends.

Basil baskets are available throughout Canada, see Fourth Floor Distribution for a dealer list. Looking to become a Basil dealer? Call 416.920.3354 for more information.
