Pinko Bike: Letter to Don Cherry gets picked up on Citynews

Posted on 12 December 2010

Our little offer to Don Cherry is making headlines!

Don Cherry’s comments about “left-wing pinkos” in Toronto has attracted a lot of buzz, it’s also landed him a gift – a pink bicycle.

A Toronto bicycle shop is giving him a British made Pashley in what is described as a “a blushing shade of ironic pink.”

Cherry’s rant on Tuesday at the swearing in of Toronto’s new mayor Rob Ford included “pinkos”, cyclists and the “left-wing” media.

He says they’ll damage Toronto’s reputation as an inclusive and cosmopolitan city.

Curbside Cycle has posted an open letter on its website.

It says bicycles are simply the best way to get around in the city and they reduce car congestion.

“So we’d like to take a little egg off your face and allow you to (literally) do a bit of backpedalling,” the letter says in offering him a bicycle.

Earlier this week, city councillors made a light-hearted protest against Cherry’s tirade by wearing pink scarves, suits and accessories.

The sportscaster’s comments received a lot of buzz on the Internet this week, even some American blogs took notice.

Most of those who commented blasted Cherry for what they called a divisive rant. Others stood up for him, saying he speaks for many Canadians ignored by the left.

Two Toronto groups are selling T-shirts and buttons embracing the left-wing and pinko labels.

Cherry backed Ford’s campaign for mayor.
