DEVINCI CARTIER

Urban Discoverer

There are few other bikes like the Cartier. To the urban commuter it might be the perfect balance of daily reliability and weekend exploration. Named after the explorer, Jacques Cartier, this bike was a collaboration of Devinci and Curbside Cycle! It's a new world city bike that opens new horizons.

THE CITY IS YOUR PLAYGROUND

The Cartier was conceived in collaboration with Devinci and Curbside Cycle to design a city bike that elaborated Devinci's core commitment to city cyclist - while keeping the Devinci high-performance DNA acutely present. To the urban cyclist who treats the city as their daily and weekend playground, the Cartier is a high acceleration, curb-hopping machine that balances performance and reliability perfectly. Whether its midnight explorations on unknown streets, weekend trips to far away coffee shops, or adding fun to your daily commute, the Cartier charts new paths.

THE DEVINCI

CARTIER

Let's see what makes this bike so special!

EXPLORE YOUR CITY

So many bike brands assume a city bike is always an upright Dutch style bike, lost in the past, and never to be improved. But, what if that were not the case?

The Cartier may not be as low-maintenance as its internally-geared Dutch cousins, but it comes close. Unlike traditional city bikes, the Cartier adds a kick of adrenaline. Punchy acceleration and tight-corner handling, all with an eye to safety.

How is it safe? Here's where the Cartier breaks with past city bike design. All-weather disc brakes. 27.5" wheels. A wider tire. Read on and we shall explain!

IT'S WHEELY GOOD!

Devinci takes wheels seriously. After all, it's where the rubber truly hits the road.

Like all Devinci bikes, the Cartier features a strong double walled rim, rust-resistant stainless steel spokes and a puncture resistant tire.

But, where the Cartier gets interesting is its wheel size. Like a mountain bike, it uses a 650B (27.5") wheel, perfect for the constant stop-and-start, left-and-right acceleration and agility of city riding.

And, it's wider 45mm width means that you have sure-footed handling on streetcar tracks, icy streets, and gravel trails.

"ONE BY"

If you visit a bike shop these days a lot of staff will talk about 1x gearing, or "one by." What on earth does that mean?

It means we've all come to realize that bikes are often sold with too many gears! If you don't use them, they just provide more maintenance. So, why not give the rider all they need?

A 1x system simply means there is one chainring on the crankset (where the pedals are) rather than three. You get a nice wide range corset in the back - on the rear wheel - and that covers you for pretty much anything a short or long city ride can throw at you.

Now, go for a ride!

STOPS ON A DIME

Why disc brakes on a city bike?

Disc brakes are often seen on mountain bikes, where the rider has to stop suddenly to avoid injury. But, the same is true in the city, perhaps even more-so.

Disc brakes don't use the rim as a braking surface and thus maintain consistent control in all-weather. Plus, they are more powerful than rim brakes, and lower maintenance too.

The Cartier uses cable activated disc brakes rather than hydraulic. This keeps long term maintenance costs lower.

IT'S IN THE DETAILS

One thing we love about the Cartier is it's attention to detail.

If you look carefully you'll see the frame has reflective details throughout. It's very subtle but you can't miss it at night.

Another reason we love the Cartier is that it comes with fenders already! And they're nice ones too. Made of lightweight aluminum.

Of course, we love the Cartier for being Canadian. That means the bike has rust-resistant hardware throughout.

Finally, we helped design the Cartier! We wanted a zippy and versatile city bike that was a bit more rock-and-roll then your average city bike. It's a fresh approach, and it's really fun too!

If you're shopping for a bike like the Cartier you may find there's nothing quite like it. That's because most bike companies don't really think city bikes are all that interesting. So, why not look to Quebec, where Devinci and Cannondale duke it out? Historically, these are the two leaders in aluminum bicycle manufacturing. The difference? Cannondale is busy making concept bikes that are definitely cool on concept, while Devinci makes bikes that fit within a mature user experience environment.

HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Two high Quebec brands who take R&D seriously and aren't boring

650B wheels for acceleration, cornering and safety (wider footprint)

Simple "1x" ("one by") drivetrain that cuts out front derailleur for lower maintenance

Cable activated disc brakes for all-weather power and low maintenance

Internal cable routing to reduce maintenance and yearly tune-up costs

Puncture resistant tires

TREADWELL-3

MSRP $519 (CDN)

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Geometry that balances upright Dutch comfort with curb-hopping BMX tricks

Heavier steel forks

Low quality Shimano Tourney gears

1x7 drivetrain (7-speeds)

80/20 city bike versus recreational bike

45mm tires for safe all-weather footprint

Powerful low maintenance mechanical (cable) disc brakes

Cool extras:

Subtle reflective details

Once again, we compare Devinci and Cannondale - two amazing companies that were the world's first production aluminum bike makers (and both Quebecois!). But we're left asking, do these bikes really compare? While both have much in common spec wise, the 650B (27.5") wheels on the Cartier represent a more real-world, city-first philosophy.

HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Two high Quebec brands who take R&D seriously and aren't boring

Simple "1x" ("one by") drivetrain that cuts out front derailleur for lower maintenance

Internal cable routing to reduce maintenance and yearly tune-up costs

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

DEVINCI CARTIER VS DEVINCI HEX DEORE

CARTIER

MSRP $759 (CDN)

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Lightweight and beefy aluminum fork

650B (27.5") wheels that balance city acceleration/agility with distance/speed

45mm tires for safe all-weather footprint

Powerful low maintenance mechanical (cable) disc brakes

1x8 drivetrain (8-speeds)

We find a lot of customers get stuck between the Devinci Cartier and the Hex Deore. Why? Because they both have a simple 1x drivetrain, both have disc brakes, and both seem cut out for urban riding. The difference? The Hex Deore may not be as punchy as the Cartier but it's speedier over longer distances and it's perfect if you take recreational distance seriously but don't want the complication of added gears.

HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Reinforced aluminum frame designed for recreation and city

Both great in the city and on gravel trails.

Simple "1x" ("one by") drivetrain that cuts out front derailleur for lower maintenance

Internal cable routing to reduce maintenance and yearly tune-up costs

From Our Buyer...

@testimonial

"Before we imported European bikes, we relied on hybrids as city bikes. Alas, very few were designed for the city. Devinci hybrids take city-cycling as seriously as they do recreational escapes. Behind each Devinci is a designer who pushes high-performance engineering without forgetting the reality of potholes or winter. Devinci's hold up."

ABOUT DEVINCI

Quebec may be the most European of Canada's provinces, and like Europe, they are made about cycling. Want proof? Take a look at their infrastructure.

Consider Montreal, the first major city to develop bicycle infrastructure back in the 1980's. Or, consider Le Route Verte, North America's largest network of dedicated cycling paths, now in excess of 5000km. That means an average Montrealer can ride their bike to work in summer or winter, ride the same bike on the weekend to escape outside of the city, or take the same bike and follow a path on a week long tour. This riding culture is the design context of the Devinci brand, it's DNA. It's what makes their bikes better.

That design context is what sets Devinci apart. While most of the bike industry builds the same commodity and competes on price, Devinci builds a user experience that is strong on breadth and depth. These are bikes of substance that take potholes and winter as seriously as they do a cottage country commute. These are bikes with soul.
