DEVINCI ST TROPEZ

Long Distance Relationship

Need an escape pod to exit the city? The Devinci St Tropez is a comfortable, hybrid bike designed for that extra mile. With its light frame and wide range of gears, there's no distance it can't go. At the same time, it's durable, designed for Northeast cities. The St Tropez is the perfect companion to go the distance with.

C'EST QUEBECOIS

If you've read the history of Devinci, you know they are very unlike their brothers and sisters in California, who also design bikes. It is really a tale of two cities. In the first it is sunshine all year, sprawled cities where the car is king, and cycling is viewed as a 'weekend thing,' usually out of the city on recreational trails. In Montreal, people ride year-round in the city and on the weekends they explore the largest network of bike trails in North America. The St Tropez is your urban city tour guide and your weekend escape pod.

THE DEVINCI

ST TROPEZ

Let's see what makes this bike so special!

GOES THE EXTRA DISTANCE

The St Tropez takes comfort and efficiency seriously. You can see efficiency in its 24-speed drivetrain and lightweight frame. You can see comfort in its adjustable stem, comfortable seat and grips.

Unlike other hybrids, the St Tropez could also be described as a 'performance hybrid.' It has a bit more punch on the speed side and lighter-weight frame and parts.

But, the St Tropez is also a Devinci. That means it takes big city life seriously. It's a fun and fast bike, but it also knows a pothole or two.

What does this all mean? It means you have a bike that can do it all! Casual rides with your friend, longer fitness rides to get the legs working, and durability for city riding too.

MORE SPEED, MORE DISTANCE

We've said the St Tropez has a more speed and distance... how?

First, there's the front fork. Instead of heavier steel, the St Tropez has a super lightweight aluminum fork. This makes the frame lighter but also higher speed handling more intuitive.

But the big thing is the 24-speed drivetrain. You might say, what is the difference between 21 speeds and 24 speeds? It's true, it doesn't seem like much!

However, 24-speeds use a different type of cog-set on the rear wheel. This is called a cassette (versus a 'freewheel.'. A cassette offers much more range on the speed side, sometimes up to 20%

WHEELY GOOD!

Riding in the city? You better take wheels seriously!

Most companies tend to cut costs in the wheels, that's because you can't really tell a good wheel from the outside.

But, it's what inside that counts:

  • The Milano's rims are double-walled for extra strength
  • The Milano uses rust-resistant stainless steel spokes
  • The Milano comes stock with puncture-resistant tires

Devinci knows your bike is your wheels.

And, Devinci takes wheels very seriously.

OPTIONAL DISC BRAKES

The St Tropez had a bit more zip than the average bike, that's why it's important to have brakes that give you control - especially in high contingency environments like the city.

Plus, they're all weather. How?

First, the St Tropez disc uses hydraulic disc brakes. That means there are no cables to freeze in the winter. And, because disc brakes don't use the rim surface to stop, they provide consistent control in all weather. If you're an all-weather rider - especially in the city - we can't recommend disc brakes enough!

ADJUSTABLE TO YOU!

While it's a fact that the more hunched over you are over the handlebars, the faster and more control you have, some people aren't out to win a race.

Plus, all bodies are different! Some of us have longer torsos and shorter arms or shorter arms and longer torsos (or the inverse!). That's why we love a bike that takes comfort and position seriously!

The St Tropez comes equipped with an adjustable stem so you can easily tweak the ride. Prefer a more upright ride? Easy! Prefer to be more hunched over for longer rides? That's easy too!

WHAT'S ON THE INSIDE COUNTS

In Canada, designing a bike means taking the details seriously. That's why we love the little things. Like, the Milano's internal cable routing.

Most bikes run the gear and brake cables completely exposed on the down-tube of the bike. Fine for the Sunbelt, not so great in Toronto.

Problem is, the down-tube is where the front wheel splashes all of its muck and grime. That means every year you have to replace your cables. And, besides being very costly, that's no fun for us and definitely no fun for you!

TWO BIKES TO CHOOSE FROM!

HOW DOES IT COMPARE?

DEVINCI ST TROPEZ VS GIANT ESCAPE-2

ST TROPEZ

MSRP $649 (CDN)

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Reinforced aluminum frame designed for recreation and city

Upright or aggressive? Adjustable stem to dial back position perfectly

Higher quality Shimano Acera shifter

11-34T cassette: more climbing range

Rust-resistant KMC-Z chain

One look at the specs show that the St Tropez is a bit better than the Giant Escape-3, but the differences are subtle. While both offer speed and distance, the St Tropez has more climbing range. And, while both bikes are fun and fast, Devinci still adds levels of durability and quality that make it the more durable bike.

HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Two high quality brands who take bikes seriously.

Hybrid geometry for casual rides or longer distance

Lightweight aluminum forks

Internal cable routing to save on maintenance

Puncture-resistant tires

Comfortable seats and grips

High quality Tektro V-Brakes

Lots of room for fenders, racks, bottles, lights

GIANT ESCAPE 3

MSRP $649 (CDN)

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Thin-wall aluminum frame designed for recreation only

Fixed stem locked into hunched-over, more aggressive position

Lower quality Shimano Altus shifter

11-32T cassette: less climbing range

Shimano HG31 chain

Steel bolts

DEVINCI ST TROPEZ DISC VS TREK FX-2 DISC

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Reinforced aluminum frame designed for recreation and city

Upright or aggressive? Adjustable stem to dial back position perfectly

11-34T cassette: more climbing range

Rust resistant stainless or galvanized bolts throughout

Sometimes it's just the frame that matters. Whereas most bike companies assume you lock your bike overnight in a three car garage, Devinci knows yours might be locked to a pole outside overnight. That means your bike is still light and fast, but also built to last.

HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Internal cable routing to save on maintenance

Puncture-resistant tires

What are the differences between the Devinci St Tropez Disc and the Cartier? That's a question we get asked a lot! Whereas the St Tropez is more a 60/40 recreational and city bike, the Cartier is more of a 60/40 city bike and recreational bike. If you're not going on long epic country rides, the Cartier increases overall city reliability and safety.

From Our Buyer...

@testimonial

"Before we imported European bikes, we relied on hybrids as city bikes. Alas, very few were designed for the city. Devinci hybrids take city-cycling as seriously as they do recreational escapes. Behind each Devinci is a designer who pushes high-performance engineering without forgetting the reality of potholes or winter. Devinci's hold up."

ABOUT DEVINCI

Quebec may be the most European of Canada's provinces, and like Europe, they are made about cycling. Want proof? Take a look at their infrastructure.

Consider Montreal, the first major city to develop bicycle infrastructure back in the 1980's. Or, consider Le Route Verte, North America's largest network of dedicated cycling paths, now in excess of 5000km. That means an average Montrealer can ride their bike to work in summer or winter, ride the same bike on the weekend to escape outside of the city, or take the same bike and follow a path on a week long tour. This riding culture is the design context of the Devinci brand, it's DNA. It's what makes their bikes better.

That design context is what sets Devinci apart. While most of the bike industry builds the same commodity and competes on price, Devinci builds a user experience that is strong on breadth and depth. These are bikes of substance that take potholes and winter as seriously as they do a cottage country commute. These are bikes with soul.
