SPECIAL EDITIONS // COLLECTORS // BIKES OF THE FUTURE

Curbside is known as a trailblazing disruptor whose commitment to bikes-as-transportation spans it's 30+ year history. Based downtown in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood, Curbside has had the luck of serving one of North America's oldest and largest cycling communities; a consumer base who is as design-sensitive as they are committed to all-year city cycling.

As city cycling has grown, one of the most exciting developments has been the engagement of high-pedigree global designers and engineers. While city bikes were once a victim of their own vernacular, today they have become more and more a global object that requires a global design as it reaches for its own standardization. A design that must adapt to all weather, all terrain and all topographies, and, of course: all manner of abuse.

At Curbside we naturally began with the Dutch bike; the most archetypical and proven city bike ever created. But, as we participated in building a city bike market outside of Europe, we became witness to an exciting surge of new design and designers. As passionate believers in the bike as transportation, we have made it our commitment to curate a portfolio of bikes that reach out to the future or celebrate the bicycle as the natural design object it is.

Using their own patented Stoneweave, the Erik frame construction is a mix of basalt and carbon; offering more strenth and resilience than carbon while also being 100% recyclable. A closer look at the angular tubing reveals an almost M.C. Escheresque rear triangle, with redundant tubes stripped away for a clean, architectural look.

Biomega NYC

Biomega is a bicycle company owned by heavyweight designers KiBiSi out of Copenhagen. Few bikes can claim to have names like Jens-Martin Skibsted, Marc Newson, or Bjarke Ingels behind it. The result of this collaboration is the NYC.

The frame incorporates a clever built in splash-guard with a CNC logo (no stickers here). Pedals are rebuildable and designed by Bjarke Ingels. The gorgeous I-beam stem is pure Marc Newson. The belt drive is all about clean lines and clean clothes, and a 7-speed internal hub and hydraulic discs keeps maintenance low.

GoCycle

One thing we've noticed as bicycles are used more and more for transportation is the pedigree of engineers making bicycles. Where bikes were once a series of welded tubes and standardized parts, city biking has created a whole new set of demands; in the case of the GoCycle, a foldable electric assist bike that is light enough to carry.

Designed by Richard Thorpe, formally an engineer with McLaren F1, the GoCycle features composite frames and wheels, a powerful British-made motor, and a clever "clean drive" belt system.

Sold out
  • Aircraft grade aluminum
  • Built-in splash guard with CNC logo
  • Marc Newson stem
  • Bjarke Ingels pedals
  • Shimano Nexus-7 hub
  • Gates Belt drive

Brompton CHPT3

Where Brompton was originally famed for being a bit of a 'professors bike', it developed a cult following with the professional cyclist set. British pro cyclists like David Millar loved the road-bike feel of the Brompton's acceleration and handling, and would often use it for commutes. This gave birth to a collaboration with David Millar's CHPT3 brand.

The Bromption CHPT3 has seen several iterations in the last decade, with a small number delivered to Canada. It features high-speed gearing, lightweight titanium fork and swingarm, and a special edition Brooks Cambium seat.

Sold out
  • Hand-brazed in London, England
  • Compact fold, long wheelbase
  • Titanium extremities
  • Wide-range six-speed gearing
  • Ltd Edition Brooks Cambium saddle
  • Special edition Schwalbe One tires

Brompton Explore

Whereas Brompton was first designed for London, it's customers have pushed the bike beyond the city. While collaborations like the CHPT3 prove that Brompton is adequate to the speed-set, the Explore pushes adventure offroad, tying into the bikepacking obsession currently sweeping the globe.

Designed with a lower gear for heavier loads, the Explore is a limited edition bike that appears a couple of times a decade and is shipped in very limited quantities.

Sold out
  • Hand-brazed in London, England
  • Compact fold, long wheelbase
  • Wide-range six-speed gearing
  • Ltd Edition Brooks Cambium saddle
  • Special edition Schwalbe tires

Batavus BuB

When we first brought Batavus to Canada it was a moment of real self-reflection for one of Holland's biggest bike companies. In Holland, the city bike had not been revolutionized in a century, but North America proved that something lighter and more modern was required.

Made of aluminum, the BuB was cleverly shaped like a paperclip and weighed half the weight of most heavy Dutch bikes. While the BuB didn't quite take over North America like Batavus wanted, there are about 600 floating around Canada and the USA, and each one is a collectors item indeed.

No Longer Available

  • Lightweight aluminum frame
  • Paperclip design
  • 3-speed internal gears
  • Hebie chainglider
  • Lots of plug-and-play accessories

Abici Granturismo

While we were trailblazing North America with Dutch bikes, we were suddenly made aware that Italy had an equally rich cycling culture. On a trip to Denmark and Holland we made a side trip to Parma, where we met Abici bikes. An instant hit, we even helped collaborate a special edition Kate Spate edition - a collectors item indeed!

While not quite cut out for Canadian weather, the Abici bikes were gorgeous. Their swoopy step-through frame and iconclastic chain guard are pure Italian vernacular.

No Longer Available

  • Steel frame
  • Hand-brazed in Venezia, Italy
  • Full chaincase
  • Very lightweight
  • 3-speed hubs

Biomega Marc Newson

Not too many bike companies have the design chops or money to hire Marc Newson (former head designer at Apple), but Jens-Martin Skibsted (owner of Biomega), happens to be his buddy. First introduced in the early 2000's, the Marc Newson set the design world on fire; proving at the time that bicycles were an untouched design entity.

The Marc Newson is made of highly malleable 'superplastic' aluminum, and it's monocoque frame is glued together with F1 epoxy. It's light, strong, but most of all, it's revolutionary. On permanent exhibit in the SF MoMA. Ten sold in North America.

No Longer Available

  • Monocoque aluminum frame
  • Superplastic formed aluminum
  • Glued with F1 epoxy
  • Glow in the dark (yellow only)
  • Marc Newson i-beam stem

Biomega Ross Lovegrove

Ross Lovegrove is a famous Welsh designer known for organic materials and organic shapes. Working with Biomega, Ross Lovegrove produced one of the first bamboo bikes; creating a trend that continues to last to this day. As an organic material, bamboo is biodegradable and offers incredible strength and weight savings over metals.

The Ross Lovegrove also featured a very special edition Marc Newson stem that swivelled to save space in apartment hallways. Only one sold in North America. It also uses a unique shaft drive designed in collaboration with BMW.

No Longer Available

  • Aircraft grade aluminum main joints
  • Bamboo tubing
  • Marc Newson stem w/ locking swivel
  • Shimano Nexus-7 hub
  • Cardanic Shaft drive
  • Disc Brakes

Moulton New Series

Back in 2002 we had the pleasure of drinking tea with Sir Alex Moulton in his walled estate. He was thrilled to see his bikes sold in Canada by a passionate group of young retailers.

There is a good reason why a Moulton bike features in the NYC MoMA. It challenges the shape of a bicycle by solving the problem of vertical compliance and horizontal stiffness that befalls all diamond-shaped bicycles. By using a bridge 'space-frame' the bike naturally absorbs shock while remaining very stiff. We've sold several Moultons on special order and continue to do so. Please inquire if interested.

Kronan

We have Kronan to thank for the store we are today. Back in 2006 magazines like Wallpaper* were luring people back downtown to smaller but stylish apartments and promoting a lifestyle of greater proximity and intimacy. But the question remained: once you had this lifestyle, how did you get around? Urban dwellers suddenly realized walking is too far and driving is too close.

Kronan was a Swedish army bike retooled for urban cycling and it became the bike that started the city bike boom. While no longer available, the Kronan was a Swedish-made design classic that is still unforgettable.

No Longer Available

  • Swedish Army design
  • Heavy (and we mean heavy!) frame
  • Upright riding position
  • Rack with built-in pump holder
  • Unique license plate
  • Chainguard
  • Bottle generator light set
  • Many cool colours
